Jewel Box Sets Auditions for ‘Born Yesterday’

The Jewel Box Theatre is conducting auditions for “Born Yesterday” from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 6 and 8 at the theater, 225 Iverson St. in Poulsbo.
Roles for “Born Yesterday” include four women and eight men ages 20-60.
“Born Yesterday” will be presented at the Jewel Box during the weekends from April 2 to 25. Performances will be 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.
“Born Yesterday” is a classic comedy by Garson Kanin and directed by Laurel Watt.
“Born Yesterday” is about the crooked businessman Harry Brock and his girlfriend, the charming, but dumb ex-chorus girl Billie. Her lack of social graces embarrasses even Harry, so he hires handsome, smart Paul Verrall to educate her. This comedy enjoyed one of the longest runs in history on Broadway.

Shuffle at the Jewel Box

An announcement from our friends at the Jewel Box Theatre in Poulsbo:

“The Jewel Box Theatre annouces that Laurel Watt has accepted a new position with the theater. She will become artistic advisor for the Jewel Box.

“Watt will continue to act and direct as well as be involved in the set design, director selection and teaching theatrical classes. She also will carry on her work in selecting productions that the Jewel Box will perform each year.

“Her former position as artistic director will be assumed by Todd Erler. No stranger to the theater, Erler has been involved as an actor, director and been the director of the Portable Reality Show and well as participant since 2002. He has many years of experience in the theatrical field before joining the Jewel Box. Erler will assume the overall management of the artistic endeavors of the theater and work in consultation with Watt to ensure that the Jewel Box continues its high level of commitment to bringing quality entertainment to the community.”

Jewel Box Offers Ticket Specials

“Wanting to do its part in this slow economy, the Jewel Box Theatre will offer a special discount on a limited number of tickets during the opening weekend of shows. And the theater plans to offer this opening weekend special for every show going forward.

“These special tickets will not be available by reservations or at the door. They can only be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com <http://www.brownpapertickets.com/> in increments of two (search: Poulsbo/Piano). The price is $12 for two tickets Friday night and $16 for two tickets Saturday night.

“The next show, which opens May 29, is ‘I Love a Piano ,’ a revusical that follows the ownership of a piano from 1910 to present day through the songs of Irving Berlin . Ragtime, Prohibition, the Great Depression, the big band era of World War II, it’s all here in song, dance and comedy.

Local Groups Win State Theater Awards; BCT Advances to Regional

Overtones ,” a short play performed by Bremerton Community Theatre , won three awards at the statewide “Kaleidoscope ” one-act competition conducted over the weekend in Edmonds by the Washington State Community Theater Association.
“Overtones” is one of two plays selected by adjudicators Mark Kuntz and B.J. Douglas to advance to regional competition. Its director, Katrina Baxter Hodiak , was one of two directors recognized for outstanding achievement, and BCT was also recognized for best costumes.
Silverdale’s CSTOCK and Poulsbo’s Jewel Box Theatre also garnered awards during the three-day competition. CSTOCK’s “Musical of Musicals ” earned Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble, and won two member awards — the Washington Treasure and Magic Moment.
Sharon Greany of the Jewel Box’s entry, an original musical by Gwen Adams titled “Empty Orchestra ,” was an honoree for Outstanding Achievement in Acting.
