I would say that a number of people choose to carry a gun for various reasons or another. I cannot carry a concealed weapon YET, but with my husband being in the military and out to sea half the time I am working my way to getting one.
People who choose to carry a concealed weapon should definitely be responsible for it and the actions taken with it.
A responsible citizen would most likely be "packing heat" for their own protection. I know of at least one individual actually making a citizens arrest on the outside of a college campus of a drug dealer and taking both the dealer and the student buying the drugs to the police station. I agree with John's statement "Have you ever heard of a serial killing at the local gun range, police dept or gun shop? A law abiding citizen, with a CCP permit, would eliminate mass killings."
I do not see the problem with people obtaining a concealed weapons license and carrying a weapon.
In answer to your question, I am a stay at home Mom, who lives in WA state.

Alex: Gun-free zones don't make sense and are a target for a criminal to cause much harm. The bad guy knows people in gun-free zones are unarmed and defenseless. Have you ever heard of a serial killing at the local gun range, police dept or gun shop? A law abiding citizen, with a CCP permit, would eliminate mass killings.

It seems most states have quietly authorized concealed carry over the past 20 years or so. The worst case scenarios frequently predicted have not come to pass.

For safety, it makes sense to have a number of responsible citizens ready to use a firearm as a last resort in random places all of the time. Guns aren't for everyone, but the final decision should be made by the individual, not one size fits all government mandates.

If it makes sense to allow the concealed carry of handguns, (most states do) why have a checkerboard pattern of jurisdictions (National Parks) and locations within a state where it is not legal to carry a gun?

I once saw a sign at Point No Point County Park stating that firearms were prohibited on that property. I checked Kitsap County Park's website yesterday and was not able to find park rules.

Just like a driver’s license, why isn’t a concealed carry permit issued in one state, honored in the other 49?
