Commissioners Expecting Dim Numbers

County commissioners Steve Bauer read Monday’s story about Bremerton’s projected $4 million shortfall in its 2010 budget.

His response: “We’re going to get bad news this afternoon.”

Shawn Gabriel, the county’s chief budget boss, is scheduled to give commissioners an update. Such updates have been happy times lately almost never. Construction projects boosted sales tax revenues higher than expected a couple of times. There’s been nothing big enough to hire anyone back or open the building on Fridays.

The commissioners agreed with Bauer that this is the year the county has to get better about getting its budget story out to the public in ways it hasn’t before. The aim is to get more residents weighing in on county spending priorities.

The meeting today is at 2 p.m. I’ll post a follow-up.
