We Are So Not Done — Well, I Am

April 27th, 2009 by Steven Gardner

Just a quick post to let you know that it’s 12:09 a.m. Monday and the Legislature is still in session. This means they’ll either drape the clock, or start a special session, which is a major, major undertaking that opens up just about every piece of legislation once thought to be dead.

12:15 a.m.: No announcement yet, but one is coming soon. From what I can tell there are two bills, one minor but dependent on the other, that have to pass, or what’s in the operating budget is changed.

This is like those times when you’re milling around waiting for the ones in the know to walk in and make an announcement.

The bill, by the way, is the one Republicans pulled a de facto filibuster on earlier, each standing up for three minutes until the Democrats were worn out and tabled the bill. But it still has to pass, or else levy equalization has to be funded 100 percent, which under the operating budget it is not. The other bill is to make a technical change to the first bill.

And still we wait.

Austin Jenkins from NPR has a better explanation of what this is like. It’s like being in an airplane on the tarmac and the captain is telling you nothing.

12:30: Special session. It looks like they’re sending us home for the night. They’ll come back sometime for the last little bit.

12:38: In the next couple of days they’ll decide when they’ll be back.

Not “Sine Die” for them, but it is for me. Until later . . .
