Report from St. Paul

September 2nd, 2008 by Steven Gardner

Ed Wolfe, the Bremerton attorney who’s in St. Paul as a McCain delegate finished a long night at the convention and talked to me about the events there.

Obviously the schedule is in flux because of the first day’s decision, which everyone there agrees was the right thing to do, to call off the events while the hurricane was still passing through.

This is Wolfe’s first national convention and he describes it like going on a field trip. He’s met people from all over the U.S., “talking about the common cause.”

The highlight of the event inside was when President George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara walked in. He said the crowd applauded for what seemed like 10 minutes. “It took me back to the old days,” he said.

Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson lit up the crowd with his speech., Wolfe said.

Many of you have probably seen the news of the protests there, which are becoming a bigger deal this week than last. Wolfe has been on buses from the hotel to the convention center, he said shielded from the demonstrations. His bus was hit by a bag of something. The bus had to stop to make sure there were no explosives.

The delegates, according to Wolfe, see little of it, learning of it from television accounts. “We don’t even know they’re there,” he said. What they do say are the massive amounts of security, cops on roofs, dogs, armed guards on the buses.

On Tuesday Wolfe went on a paddle boat ride, which was accompanied by Safe Boats, made by the Kitsap company of the same name.

Wolfe said he and every delegate are looking forward to Sarah Palin’s speech.

Add me to that list.

  1. NavyRogue Says:

In regards to the violent protests that are taking place, it is just another classic example of the left acting out. Supporting groups that portray themselves as anarchist, running around damaging personal and public property, and putting people’s lives in danger while only have meek negative response from the organizers of those protests put on by Democrats.

When is it right to threaten people’s lives, damage their property, steal, and destroy public property? It isn’t. It is clear that the Democratic Party has no control over its people and fully endorses such actions. I have yet to hear Obama, Biden, or the DNC denounce such actions and tell them to stop. But even if they did, these groups do not listen to them but their own lawless group leaders.

  2. Bruce Peto Says:

Do not confuse those protesting a belief (right or left) with the primitive anarchist groups who use any publicized gathering to promote their lawless agenda.

So far, worldwide, only the most strongarm of tactics have minimized the damage these brainless wonders promote. They are the functional equivalent of the taliban or al qaeda who hide in schools and in family areas. One hopes people will finally realize what these idiots are and our government will start sending them to Gitmo where they belong.
