35th District and Counting Later Ballots
August 21st, 2008 by Steven GardnerLAST UPDATE, 9:40 P.M.: Thurston County is in, Brown is on top by 24 votes.
UPDATE, 4:30 P.M. THURSDAY: For the next 90 minutes or so, Gehring has a 10-vote lead over Marco Brown in the race for second place in the 35th District, Position 1 seat.
EARLIER CONTENT: As you may recall, at the end of election night Rebublicans Brad Gehring and Marco Brown were separated by 136 votes. After yesterday Gehring picked up five more votes. Kitsap County is the next to post new numbers, which means sometime before 4:30 p.m. the numbers should change. Gehring should be closer for a while, but Thurston County is expected to post new numbers later today. I’ll post something as soon as the numbers are in.
The first night Kitsap County was able to tabulate about 40,000 ballots. Today the county is expecting to get at something between 9,000 and 10,000. It takes longer after the election to do the counting. Before the election the ballots come in and elections workers are able to verify signatures throughout the three weeks leading up to election day. They cannot count them until election night, but by 8 p.m. there were about 40,000 ballots ready to go. As the later ballots continue to come in, elections workers still have to verify signatures before getting them counted. So the process is a little slower.
Dolores Gilmore, county elections manager, said the number of ballots left should come pretty close to the estimated 23,000 listed on the Washington Secretary of State’s site.
