Here Comes the Arctic Blast of ’09!

Biggest understatement of the week: “It’s cold!”
Heh, what you’re experiencing right now is nothing compared to the blast of arctic air pegged to spill into our region beginning Saturday night. I know what you’re thinking: “Beginning Saturday night?! You mean the arctic blast hasn’t already begun?!” Well, we’ve had an appetizer, but even colder weather is in store.
Amazingly, there are still a lot of inconsistencies among weather models in handling this arctic outbreak, but some solutions point to a possible “surprise” snow event Saturday night/Sunday as the cold air moves over the warmer waters, picking up a little bit of moisture. Unfortunately, not a whole lot of confidence is being put into this forecast, but the possibility is most certainly there for some light snow showers.
One thing I’m 100% sure about it we’re going to get MIGHTY cold the next several days. It appears I’ve been forecasting too warm (yet again) and will have to continue to adjust my temperature forecast downward even more. At this time, I’m expecting highs in the upper 30s tomorrow, low-mid 30s Sunday, mid 20s to lower 30s Monday, upper 20s and lower 30s Tuesday and low to mid 30s Wednesday with mid 30s likely through the end of the week.
Low temperatures will be bitterly cold as well and current forecasts are for colder overnight lows than last years Arctic blast at this time! Kitsap could very well record lows in the low to mid teens Monday/Tuesday nights.
An over running snow event could still happen late next week,
but models have been holding precip off until Sunday, meaning a
weeks worth of completely dry weather, granted we don’t get a
surprise snow event 
Stay warm out there and cover any unprotected plants/pipes…they will most certainly freeze…and freeze hard.

Hi there! You seem to be well versed in some of our weather patterns when it comes to cold. What other years did you notice that we had weather like this- abnormal november rain, dry/cold spell afterward. I was looking 14-16 days out and there seems to be interesting at the least, but what do you see?

A cold snap moved into Kitsap County Saturday night, along with a few snow flurries, and the weather is predicted to remain chilly, with lows dipping into the low 20s, throughout Monday and into next week. Highs will be in the mid- to low- 30s. Although the thermometer at Bremerton National Airport read 34 degrees at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, breeze from the north at 9 miles per hour made it feel more like 27 degrees. According to the National Weather Service, arctic air will continue to pour into the Seattle region through Sunday night. Cold, dry conditions will persist at least through Thursday. A common problem during extreme cold weather is damage to water pipes that freeze and burst. According to the State Farm Insurance Web site taking the following precautions, if you haven’t already done, so can help reduce the chance you’ll need to call a plumber. Insulate pipes in your home’s crawl spaces and attic, where exposed pipes are most susceptible to freezing. Heat tape or thermostatically-controlled heat cables can be used to wrap pipes. Be sure to use products approved by an independent testing organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Note the use intended (exterior or interior), and closely follow all manufacturers’ installation and operation instructions. Seal air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes. Use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out and the heat in. Disconnect garden hoses. If possible use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets. When the temperature drops, leaving a trickle of water can help keep pipes from freezing. Let warm water drip overnight, preferably from a faucet on an outside wall. Also, open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach uninsulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls. To block out the cold from your home, caulk around windows, add weather stripping to drafty doors and place insulating film over your windows. Fred: Thanks for the comment! 2006 has been the prime month I’ve looked at. July 2006 had a heatwave that put us close to 100…a warm and dry September…an abnormally wet and warm November…and a dry, arctic blast, though in 2006/2007 there were two: late Nov 06 and January 07. This is why I believe we will see more arctic air this winter.

With highs in the 30′s, wouldn’t you say calling this a true “Arctic Blast” is an overstatement? I remember back in 1985 we had a couple feet of snow, and had a couple weeks of sub-freezing weather in the early 90′s. Yeah it’s gonna be cold this week, but nothing compared to last year, etc.

No overstatement. This will be the coldest blast of the decade.
I actually have adjusted the high temperatures to the mid/upper 20s Monday and lower 30s Tuesday. The real legitimacy of this blast, however, is the overnight lows. We could see some single digits to lower teens Tuesday/Wednesday mornings. To say this ISN’T a true arctic blast just because we don’t have the snow or longevity accompanied with it isn’t really fair.
An arctic blast only has to last one day to provide the coldest temperatures of the decade, which this blast will
