Looking For New Weather Bloggers

We sadly said goodbye for now to blogger Matthew Leach, and to the Forecasting Kitsap Blog. You can find weather information on the Kitsap Sun's weather page at kitsapsun.com/weather.

But we're looking for someone (or a group of people) to try and fill that weather blogging void. If you or someone you know would like to share information about weather in Kitsap, please e-mail adice@kitsapsun.com.

**Thunderstorms Popping Up Across Kitsap**

**UPDATE–9:21 AM

Thunderstorms/showers will continue through a large part of the day today along with some breezy winds. These days are indeed rare for Western Washington, so if any of you are fans of storms you’re in luck! Maybe snap a photo or two! There is a link for the radar below so you can track the storms yourselves! Be safe,

~Matt

( click here for the radar image )

************************************************************************************************************

A look at the radar ( click here for the radar image ) will tell the story. Across portions of Kitsap County thunderstorms are popping up, especially in Central Kitsap and along the Hood Canal. In Silverdale I hear thunder every minute or so and dark, ominous looking clouds are overhead.

Please note that the radar will sporadically light up during the evening and pretty much anyone anywhere could be under a thundershower. Lightning strikes and torrential downpours are not out of the question. I just wish we had a choice. The last thing we want is lightning striking the dry brush around here. Let’s hope if anything the downpours come first!

Feel free to comment as the evening progresses about what weather conditions you are experiencing in your area. I’d like to know what’s going on around the rest of the peninsula!

For the forecast discussion and map for today, visit the blog post under this one.

Have a safe evening,

~Matt

From bothell we had one big downpour of rain no thunder or lightining as far as I can tell. However I did not wake up till 12 unless you count the time i heard the rain at 9am.

I can`t tell what is lighttning on the radar or on the models, need help with that!

    Eric—

Thanks for the update! You won’t be able to tell if lightning is around on radars per se…the radar is color coated, green meaning light rain all the way to I think purple or red which is very heavy rain. Typically in those purple and red cells there is so much force and instability imbedded in them that lightning/thunder are the result. So if you see orange/red/purple on the radar…take cover! :)

    Matt,

Do you think its safe to sleep outside tonight? Im not taking about rain or wind, just is there any chance of lightning and thunder?

It says on noaa that thunder chance till 11pm then rain after…

    Eric—

I’d stay inside tonight as it will still be quite wet, cold and unstable. This upcoming week will be beautiful, though so I’d wait just one more day.

Alright Matt, thanks for being my most fav trusted weather source.

I saw a 100 degree on the model for the first time ever, I know it won`t happen, but we know heat is there right?

Also with weather blogging is it like sports blogging where you have to have creative ideas?

    Same thought unique presentation?

Matt heard a few rumbles just now and 30 mins ago and had two lightening strikes..

    Eric–

Thanks again for the updates. I am seeing some nice summer heat by the end of this month. I don’t think we’ll hit triple digits, but some upper 80s to mid 90s look possibly by late this month. Stay tuned! And yes, weather blogging is probably very similar to sports blogging. Believe it or not, there are loads of weather stories every day that keep things interesting any day of the year. So if one day I can’t think of anything creative, I’ll write about a weather story I read on a forum or website.

    Andrew–

Thanks! I’ll add that link to my “Weather Links” section on the right hand side bar.

Daylight Savings Time: Is it Worth it?

  • No. The amount of light we get every six months changes whether the clocks do or not, so what's the point? Just give me that extra hour of sleep back and stop messing with the clock! (71%, 79 Votes)
  • Yes. It gives us something to look forward to every 6 months: More sleep starting in November and more outdoor time starting in March (29%, 33 Votes)
