Weekend for Wine and Chocolate

With Valentines Day on it’s way (on a three-day weekend, no less), local wineries and chocolatiers are gearing up for the coming buying frenzy.

And it’s not just about bringing home the box or the bottle. Looks like some regional and area proprietors are offering a little experience as well. Cost is a few dollars at each winery.

Here are a couple that are closer to home. The state’s tourism website has a few more:

On the Olympic Peninsula, six wineries from Port Townsend to Port Angeles will host a Red Wine and Chocolate weekend. Cost is $25 to taste at all wineries or $5 each. Most of the wineries are in Port Angeles, so you might consider making a weekend of it so you don’t have to risk getting tipsy for the drive back.

Seven Bainbridge Island wineries will offer tastes paired with chocolates chosen by the winemakers.

Bremerton Fountain Park

This summer, the Bremerton fountain park will host a Kitsap Wine Festival that will benefit Harrison Medical Center. For $45, you can take tastes of more than 20 wines from Washington wineries, though of the 23 wineries listed on the site for the Kitsap Wine Festival, not a one is from Kitsap. The closest they get is the Olympic Peninsula. Maybe Kitsap wineries will be included in the “and more”.

While the festival may lack local wine (so far), it will have local food. You can eat food cooked by chefs from the Harborside Conference Center and Anthony’s and local vendors including Amy’s Chocolates of Bremerton, Crimson Cove of Poulsbo, who you also can find at area farmers markets, and Monica’s Waterfront Bakery of Silverdale.

The festival will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 23.

Bainbridge Island Wineries Organize for Tours

Last summer, the Kitsap Sun wrote about the growing number of wineries about to open in Kitsap.

And now a half dozen of them on Bainbridge Island have organized into a group called Wineries of Bainbridge Island and will coordinate their hours for wine tours at least several times this summer.

The next tour will be from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Memorial Day weekend (May 23-25). Other tours are planned for July 11 and 12, and August 8 and 9.
