Lousy Day for Sports, But Not the Sports Section
March 11th, 2010 by David NelsonNot the greatest day for Kitsap sports, what with Bremerton and Kingston both bowing out of the high school state playoffs to end the West Sound basketball season. But our sports department, winding down an exhausting stretch of high school playoffs and a little event known as the Olympics, got a nice shot in the arm.
Chuck Stark and his team of Nathan Joyce, Annette Griffus, Jeff Graham and Adam Kispert — not to mention regular freelance contributors like Terry Mosher and George Edgar —put together one of the top ten daily sports sections in the country for newspapers under 40,000 circulation, according the Associated Press Sports Editors group that does the annual contest.
Keep in mind that our sports department produces that outstanding daily coverage of local sports, and keeps an eye on state and national teams for each day’s section, in addition to some of our innovative new ways to cover preps, like the Prep Beat blog and our live streaming video of football and basketball games this school year. They worked for this award.
I should mention that we had a little company around Puget Sound, and it’s good to be mentioned alongside our peers. The Seattle Times cleaned up in the contest’s category for papers between 100,000 and 250,000 circulation, being named a top daily, Sunday and special section newspaper. The Bellingham Herald was in the top ten for daily sections under 20,000, and Sunday sections in the under 40,000 category. And the Everett Herald was named a top ten Sunday edition for papers between 40,000 and 100,000 circ, and earned honorable mention in the daily category.
Here’s the rundown of the other winners in our division. We’ll knock Altoona off its high horse next year:
