The Illustrated View From Kingston
March 5th, 2010 by David NelsonThe comment thread from the previous post settled on our editorials, so here’s a preview of something coming on the Opinion page in the next few weeks.
I’ve been talking to a Kingston illustrator, Abell Smith, who’s been doing editorial cartoons on the Web site www.fightingwordscomics.com for the past five years. He’s going to submit a few cartoons to use in the coming weeks, and we’ll see what the response is like from readers to determine whether to continue. Could be fun.
His commentary on fightingwords.com is national and has a clear “alt weekly” vibe (and “alt weekly” slant, I’ll warn the conservatives in the crowd), but we’ll ask him for Kitsap-specific issues that could add to our daily mix. Right now our Opinion page cartoons are exclusively on national issues, so it may be a nice addition.
He gave me a test run this week to get a sense of his style and thinking. It ain’t bad, and offers a nice little take on one of our hot items. Here’s a preview, let me know what you think:

The human body is not ‘filth.’…Scantily clad employees may or may not be appropriate for a coffee place but their body is not ‘filth.’
Must be confusing for the kids…Maybe not.
