Tuesday was my first county planning commission meeting, and boy was it interesting.
Last week I reported on the imminent closure of the Puget Sound Therapy Services Silverdale location. The rehabilitative center offered invaluable services to area children, from birth to 18 years old. With roughly 10 days notice, the owner of the parent company, Robert White, sent a letter to families and staff informing them the three center’s locations would close as of March 20.
While I’ve written about the changes before, I wanted to give an idea of the estimated numbers of children the district is planning to move from each neighborhood. I wasn’t able to fit all the numbers in my story that ran Wednesday because there wasn’t enough room. I also want to note all numbers are approximate because the district doesn’t know how many students will be enrolled next year. Plus, there are always quirks that arise.
The school board had its first look at proposed cuts for the 2007-08 budget. Included in that list was the Olympic Pool, which I reported about last week.
The Puget Sound Blood Center is hosting a blood drive in honor of Hank Mann-Sykes this week. In addition, the blood bank is in desperate need of O negative blood, so anyone who is willing is encouraged to help out.
I went over to Edmonds last week and since I had run out of car/driver coupons I decided I’d buy a new booklet. I pull up and ask the toll both operator for a car/driver coupon book. She asked for my debit card and the transaction was final – nothing unusual there. Until… I got the ferry system’s new Wave2Go pass…
Some concerned Central Kitsap citizens brought to my attention this week that the Olympic pool could be closed next year, due to the $3.9 million budget deficit the CK School District is facing.
Because the district is just coming out of its school closure meetings and is still addressing boundary line adjustments, there hasn’t been much talk about the specifics of what could be cut next year. In addition, administrators have said they don’t want people to become too frantic over some of the proposed cuts because nothing has been decided yet.
A call to county prosecutor Russ Hauge Tuesday let me know that the Class C felony charges filed against CK Commissioner Josh Brown are no longer being handled by Kitsap County.
CK parents from both sides of the district have now been given the chance to ask administrators questions about the proposed elementary school boundary changes.
Parents in the west part of the Central Kitsap School District had their first look at two proposed boundary adjustments tonight during a public forum. The first option proposes splitting the children between Green Mountain and Cougar Valley. The second option proposes the same, but also with a smaller portion of students attending Silverdale Elementary.
