Weekly wine defined: Vegetal

Grapes are fruit, so why are we defining the term vegetal when talking about what is essentially a fun-filled grape juice?

Well, as you may have noticed in previous wine posts we’ve written, we often comment on the versatility of wine. In this case, we’re defining a term used to describe young wine.

When a wine smells and tastes vegetal it is usually means the wine was made from unripe grapes. The strong green herbal characteristic could remind you of green beans, green peppers or asparagus. In some wines a subtle vegetable smell adds complexity, but if it takes over the other flavors of the wine, the wine is flawed.
