Meet an Italian winemaker at Monica’s Waterfront Bakery

Brynn writes:

While perusing Facebook I saw an event post from Monica, owner of Monica’s Waterfront Bakery and Cafe in Silverdale. Italian winemaker Maurizio Marchetti will be at her cafe July 26 with samples of his wine. It looks pretty cool, so if you’ve got some flexibility during the day — or an extended lunch hour — RSVP and check it out.

Here’s the event description from Facebook (RSVP to Monica directly via Facebook):

Maurizio’s fabulous life brought him in contact with Monica and Mark last October, and now he will be at the cafe on Tuesday July 26, at lunchtime, to offer samples of his lovely Verdicchio, Later Harvest Verdicchio and Montepulciano wines. He will sign bottles for you if you would like him to!

We will offer tastes of his homemade pasta and a few other treats to go with it, so even if you only have a few minutes for lunch stop by… and say Ciao!!

Maurizio Marchetti’s great, great grandfather was an exotic spice trader, sailing to the Far East over 250 years ago. He was quite successful, allowing the family to buy the land that is now the Marchetti estate near the Adriatic coast of Italy, in a region that sees nearly 200 days of sun each year. On their property, they have a castellino (‘little castle’) whose interior walls have murals of Chinese sailors loading ships with the cinnamon, cumin, and paprika that were so highly prized in his day.

Maurizio has followed his passion in making wine, and is so selective about the grapes he uses, that he sometimes produces as little as a half-bottle of wine per plant. To that end, he uses a special pneumatic press for a single, extremely light press, called a “flower press”. Maurizio loves to say, with a nudge and a wink, “Butterflies crush my grapes as they fly by with their wings.”

Friday ‘wine’ tasting in Silverdale

This isn’t technically a wine tasting, but it is a tasting and it involves fermented fruits, so we’re posting about it because it fits in the realm of fun things to do and try in Kitsap.

On Friday Monica Downen, owner of Monica’s Waterfront Bakery and Café, will be hosting another tasting event.

This time the items to be poured will be hard ciders. Downen has invited Finnriver Farm and Cidery to hop peninsulas from their home in Chimacum to Old Town Silverldale.

The tasting runs from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and requires no reservations. The Finnriver people will talk about their certified organic farm and the French style of their hard ciders, according to Downen.

Here’s what Monica’s Facebook page says about the evening:

We have the special honor of having Finnriver Cidery with us for this tasting! Luckily in time for mother’s day, their ‘Methode Champenoise’ sparkling ciders and cordial style dessert wines are the tastiest around! Learn all about them and meet Jim from their Tasting Room!

Get 6 tastes of wine with appetizers to go with them! Please bring a donation for the food bank.

Wind down your week and wind up your weekend with a Wine Tasting at Monica’s! Everyone will be entered into a drawing to win a $20 gift certificate! You do not have to be present to win! Come on in, enjoy great wines and a few nibbley things to go along with them.

Monica’s Waterfront Bakery Hosting Wine Tasting

Thanks to Eric, who sent me a link to his site localwineevents.com, I’ve got a wine tasting in Silverdale to share with everyone.

Here’s the info about the event:

Sounds like Monica sells wines from family-owned wineries in Washington, Oregon and Italy. Occasionally she gets wine from other parts of the Pacific Northwest, Spain, Portugal and France, according to her site.

Here’s another tid-bit that caught my eye: “Our wines are usually discounted at our wine tasting events.”

So, if you’re looking for something to do Friday, check out Monica’s wine tasting and drop off some non-perishable food items for the greater good. Her cafe is located at 3472 NW Byron Street in Old Town Silverdale.
