What we’re drinking: Menage a Trois Red

This week I’ve decided to write about a wine you could probably find just about anywhere. It’s a wine that no matter where you buy it or where it’s served, it’s probably going to taste the same every time.

And that’s not a bad thing, sometimes it’s nice to know what you’re getting, and if it’s a decent wine, it’s nice to know it will be dependable.

I purchased Folie a Deux’s Menage a Trois Red after having their Menage a Trois white. This Napa winery is well known, and from what I’ve heard, their red blend is relatively popular among wine consumers.

It blends Zinfandel, Cabernet and Merlot. The color is deep purple and I would describe it as jammy which left me feeling the finish was slightly sweet (not sweet like dessert wine sweet, but it doesn’t leave your mouth dry).

It’s a wine you’d want to drink now and not cellar. If you’re looking for complexity or a wine that makes you think, this one probably won’t fit that bill. But, if you’re looking for a red to bring to a party where you aren’t sure what your host may like, I’d definitely recommend this one.

Here’s what the winery has to say about the blend:

This wine exposes the fresh, ripe, jam-like fruit that is the calling card of California wine. Three saucy grapes make up the blend. Zinfandel adds a juicy character, Merlot mellows and Cabernet adds backbone. Forward, spicy and soft, this delicious dalliance makes the perfect trio.

The wine runs about $12, but is often discounted a few dollars at the local grocery store.
