More Paper Bag Dining on the Way
April 30th, 2009 by Steven GardnerThis rapid fire succession of blog posts is the result of yours truly catching up with e-mails after the weekend in Olympia.
The News Tribune, as in the newspaper from Tacoma, has all the hubbub over Sonic’s arrival in Puyallup.
Chris Henry, over at the “Speaking of South Kitsap” blog points out that the article mentions that the franchise owner is scouting other locations, including Port Orchard and Bremerton.
Chris, however, has never been to a Sonic. As a person who has, I want to correct one point. I don’t think it carries the cachet Krispy Kreme once did. (“When Krispy Kremes are hot, they are to other doughnuts what angels are to people.” — Roy Blount Jr.) I don’t think Krispy Kreme is as beloved as it once was, given that you can find them anywhere now, except here, of course.
Being one who knows the highs and lows of paper-bag dinner fare, I can talk a little about Sonic. I think people like Sonic, but I don’t know that there’s the affinity for that as much as there is for the heavenly doughnut, or the In-N-Out hamburger. If there are Sonicaholics among you, feel free to correct me.
This whole development, however, is important for another reason. It opens up a little battle between Bremerton and the red-headed stepchild across the bay. Both of us, I believe, have enough vacant store fronts that would accommodate a Sonic, but Sonic wants a place where its employees can roller skate to your window, so I don’t know where the best place for that is.
Should Sonic arrive in Port Orchard first, I hereby commit to come spend my money at your store, as a gesture of my acknowledgment of your victory. And I’ll bring along someone’s red-headed stepchild.

“employees can roller skate to your window” – well now, shades of yesteryear.
I used to work in such a place on Kitsap Way – or was it 6th street in Bremerton? I commuted to school in Seattle and worked at the drive-in at night.
I didn’t skate to the cars but worked the inside counter and cleaned the stainless steel equipment every night at closing. It was a great place and good food, good people.
The girls were super skaters and it was there, at that job, that I decided I would never have stainless steel kitchen appliances in any house I owned.
Welcome to a return of the skating car hops!
For old times sake and good luck, the new business should locate their first KC business in Bremerton…maybe even on 6th st. or Kitsap Way.

Give the Sonic to Silverdale. Only been there once, but it totally sucked. I want a Burgerville here in Port Orchard.
Actually, with Buck’s A&W and the new Snap Dogs Diner here in Port Orchard, my burger needs are more than covered.

Gotta go with In-N-Out for speed, and price. Love the limited choices idea. makes each one of them fresh everytime. But, Burgerville USA has sweet potato fries and amaaaaazing milkshakes. I say why choose? Let’s get em both here.

[...] may be looking to open a spot in Kitsap. Bremerton and South Kitsap and Silverdale could be possible spots. As a Bremertonian, I say we should hold [...]

I wonder if the old KFC location on Naval would be large enough for a Sonic.
Growing up in Texas, we had Sonic’s, Chick-fil-A’s, and Whataburgers (thanks for reminding me Colleen!).
Sonic was the saltiest of all, but they were popular. Whataburgers were always great after going out all night and getting the munchies.
Chick-fil-A’s have amazing chicken sandwiches (very simple, but very tasty)…but they do not open on Sundays.
Either way, locating a Sonic to B-town would generate local jobs for our high schoolers. It would be a neat addition to our community.

Lisa Browon, D-Spokane or Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, is probably – at this moment – crafting “An Act Concerning the Taxation of Food Delivered Via Roller Skates” for the next legislative session.
Another of our esteemed representatives will – no doubt – introduce legislation to address the “safety” issues surrounding the delivery of food via rollerskates.
Looking for a place where “employees can roller skate to your window”? Try Idaho.

If true, these women are in the wrong job.
“Taxation of Food Delivered Via Roller Skates” should only apply if the Roller Skates had an active part in the food preparation…otherwise the skates are taking the place of shoes to get the food to the cars.
What is so special about using skates over shoe leather soles?
