Two Naughties, One Nice

Thursday’s newspaper contains two counts of naughtiness, with one chance for people to redeem themselves, if they’re out of jail or something.

First off, people living in a shed on a Navy Yard City property may have let their candles get out of hand and burned the shed down. There is more to this story, a bit of string for later, but first let’s get into the other news.

As if the Olympic College baseball team’s 2-27 record wasn’t enough to make players miserable, the team and its coaches were suspended while the school investigated incidents from the team’s return trip from Skagit Valley.

Now, for the good news. Earth Day events begin Saturday, including a cleanup of Sinclair Inlet. (See Christopher Dunagan’s story that contains contact information and a list of the few events.)

Earlier I mentioned there being more to the fire story. When reporters cover an incident, not everything that happens there gets into the printed story the next day. Sometimes it’s because more news develops.

Police investigate, more people come forward, etc. Other times there is information provided at the scene that is interesting, but doesn’t fit in the context of the next-day story. Sometimes we find out things we can’t verify. Without verification it becomes irresponsible to print some information.

All three of those elements could turn up out of the fire story. More interesting to me, however, was information reporter Josh Farley received in a fashion reporters like to call “gathering string.” Over time, you pick up tidbits here and there until you can tie all the strings together to create a whole new story. Josh mentioned some of what happened at the scene out there, and I am willing to bet that information will come out in a story later.

It’s cruel of me, perhaps, not to mention what it was. It’s nothing urgent. It’s interesting, but not life changing. Just thought I’d let you in on the process a bit.
