Watson and Crick, Lewis and Clark, Chocolate and Peanut Butter. History is full of great collaborations and now it seems the world of beer is learning from the example. Over the last year or so we have been seeing a handful of these “collabeerations” coming out and they have pushed the boundaries of brewers creativity to the max.

This trend was kinda kicked into high gear a couple of years ago when Adam Avery of Avery Brewing and Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing Co. both brewed a beer and named it Salvation. After a few conversations they decided that it would be easier to combine the two beers into one special bottling rather than to go through the court system to see who had the rights to the name. And Collaboration Not Litigation was born. You can still find this beer around. It was actually so popular that they have done a couple of bottlings.

Shortly after Adam and Vinnie decided to get the rest of the Brett Pack together and brew one of the hardest to get beers ever to hit our area, Isabell Proximus. What do you get when you combine Adam Avery, Vinnie Cilurzo, Rob Todd of Allagash, Tomme Arthur of Lost Abbey and Sam Calagione of Dogfish head. Well, it’s an American Wild Ale. It’s sour and spicy. Against all odds they didn’t make an IPA. It is by all rights a near perfect beer. Here’s a link to Beer Advocate where people do nothing but gush about it. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/18149/42816.

As the trend has ramped up Stone Brewing Co. has traveled far and wide (Scotland, Denmark, and Norway) to make interesting collaborations using regional ingredients’ to make some seriously inventive brews. For god’s sake they even let Ken Schmidt, a home brewer in on one. These brews are so complex that I am not going to try and explain every one of them so here’s a link. http://www.stonebrew.com/collab/default.asp#coconut

Keep your eyes peeled for the next one though Stone Brewing Co., 21st Amendment and Firestone Walker. I can’t wait.

I can’t list all the collabeerations going on out there but I would like to end on a few that are hitting close to home. Draft only, Elysian Brewing Co. and Green Flash got together produced a beer called The Red Queen. It is a spiced up saison and a few kegs should be coming our way. The next one which should be amazing is a teaming of the brewer from Orval- Jean Marie Rock and Boulevard Brewing. Look for the imperial pilsner style beer to be hitting the shelves soon.

These beers are seldom okay, you either love them or hate them, but I always want to try them.

What I Drank On My Vacation

Sometimes you just get lucky. As many home owners know life is full of ups and downs. The week before Xmas we found a little spot of mildew on the wall by our fireplace that turned out to be a leak that had been free flowing for atleast a couple of years. Unbeknowst to my wife and I our wall had slowly been turning to compost and we had to call in the proffesionals to fix it. Here’s where the luck comes in. The General Contractor we hired is a huge beer collector and in a moment of extreme kindness he invited my wife and I over to his house to check out his cellar and relax in a place that didn’t reak of wet wood.

The night quickly turned into a blur but from what I can recall, I tried to take notes, it was kinda amazing.  Here is what we tasted:

Ballast Point-Big Eye IPA-San Diego, CA. 6% ABV.  American Centennial hops are  used  to bitter, flavor, finish, and dry hop the Big Eye. Its full hop flavor is guaranteed to please the palate of the true hop head.  That”s the commercial description, we found it to have a rush of floral, citrus notes, big clean and flavorful without being boozy. If I were to give it a comparison to something that is readily available in this market I would say its more Dogfish Head than Stone.

Hales-Rudyards Rare-2003 Vintage-Seattle, WA. 9.2% ABV supposedly. Couldn’t find a commercial description so you’ll just have to live with ours. Some of these aged beers go so bad so fast but not in this case. This still had some serious legs. to say it was roasty was an understatement. The nose was sweet and carmelly and it had a massive burst of fig and dried fruit. The only problem this beer had was that it was a little thin for our tastes but all in all it was amazing.

Brewdog-Paradox Port Dundas-2008 Vintage-Fraserburgh, Scottland 10%ABV.  This again is a vintage beer that I couldn’t find a commercial descriptin for since they have changed casks. A stout aged in 1966 Port Dundas Whiskey casks. The nose was filled with peaty, earthy, whiskey aromas (yum). The problem is it tasted washed out. the nose left us anticipating something amazing and it didn’t follow through. The saving grace was the pairing with a Dubliner Stout Cheese, fantastic.

Brewery Ommegang-Ommegedon-2007 Vintage-Cooperstown, NY 8%ABV. The commercial description is as follows: Belgian-style ale with a wild twist , a dose of Brettanomyces yeast and a blast of dry hopping. It’s a strong blonde ale with a sharp citrus flavor that, like the other Ommegang ales, has a dry finish. Its dryness and funkiness begat the name of Ommegeddon. for the time when the forces of light and dark battle for world dominion. It’s time for you to pick your side. Well we decided that this beer gets the thumbs up. To say it is funky is an understatement, a slight sourness and a crispness from champagne like bubbles. The hotness of this beer didn’t detract from its all around flavor in the least, the commercial description was spot on.

Now this is where it starts getting a little fuzzy……

Stone Brewing Co.-Double Bastard-2001 Vintage-San Diego, CA-10.5% ABV. As with most Stone products, we are not worthy of knowing what hops they use, the malts or even the IBU’s because apperently we are morons. Thats fine as long as they keep doing what they do so well. This beer is history in a glass, so beautiful on the nose with a malty sweetness and a slight sticky hop scent. This has changed from a Bastard into what can best be described as the Jerry Garcia of beers. Super mellow, a long, long  finish and slightly out of tune. Balanced it was not but the sum of its parts definetly made for a great trip.

Avery Brewing-The Czar-2006 Vintage-Boulder, CO-11.3% ABV. Behold the stunning crimson hues through the inky blackness. Inhale the noble Hallertau hops, spicy and floral. Savor the flavors redolent of English toffee, rich mocha, sweet molasses, candied currants and a hint of anise. These are the words of brewing rockstar Adam Avery. If you aren’t drinking his beers, you should be. Why drink stouts? This is why. Dark as night, huge and flavorful with a deep chocolaty sweetness and a very pleasant warming finish.

Finally before my wife could wisk me away we cracked open…..

De Dolle-Still Nacht-2003 Vintage-Esen, Belgium-????ABV. I am ashamed to say we don’t remember this beer but this is what the brewers have to say: Stille Nacht (Silent Night) is a prestige beer from De Dolle Brouwers, brewed for Christmas. It has the highest density of any Belgian beer (27°Pl). It has been boiling for many hours, brewed with pale malt with white candy sugar in the kettle. The Nugget hops gives an extra bitterness to balance the extreme sweetness due to the density. The taste triangle is completed with some acidity of the fermentation. It is a very interesting beer to age. We have samples of every bottling we have done so far and aging hasn’t decreased the quality of this beer. Keep some samples at 10°C and mark the year on the cap with an alcohol marker. Cheers!! Umm yeah, ok we’ll go with that.

Please leave tastings like this to the proffesionals because I definetly felt like my luck had run out the next morning. And if you are looking for a good contractor I recommend Simcoe Construction and All Construction out of Purdy. They do good work and they know how to woo new customers.

If you want to be part of one of our tastings of insane beers or offer up your pub, bottleshop or restauraunt as a location we can hold a  weekly beer panel meeting to taste, review and rate new and exciting beers from around the world. Drop me a line at beerspotting@hotmail.com and I will put you on the list. These are free to you, everyone that participates needs to bring one 22oz or 750ml bottle or two 12 oz bottles of something that we haven’t posted on Beer Spotting. The location rotates between the establishments that want to sponsor us.

I haven’t determined if you can truly have to much of a good thing but I believe we are about to  find out. I was doing my weekly scan of the internet today while waiting for the ferry to pick me up and I came across a posting on the WSLCB website for a Hale’s Ale House that is going to be opening at the Silverdale Mall. From what I can tell it will be directly across from Silvercity.

If you haven’t tried Hale’s Ales I would be stunned. Mike Hale is a local fixture in the Kitsap Beer culture and the VERY proud owner of the longest running independently owned brewery in Washington State. With some resent staff changes and additions of new beers to his line up he has made me stand up and take notice. Most notably the addition of Supergoose. This beer is the bench mark of what a great Pacific NW Imperial IPA should be. Super fresh, super clean and of course super hoppy (but in a good way).

If the food is as good as his beer we should all be in good hands.

Okay beer lovers it’s time to bust out the fancy glassware. The first shipment of Green Flash Brewing Co. beers has hit our market area. This is somewhat bittersweet for me because the brand went to one of the other esteemed distributorships in the area but at least we get to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

From the information I received we will see five different beers in draft and package, I’ve moved heaven and earth to try these beers in the past so feel lucky that they are making it easy on us. These beers are good to great with my personal favorite being the West Coast I.P.A.  A super sessionable SoCal style I.P.A. that has the perfect balance of piney to citrus hoppiness and a sweet floral nose. I pulled the “official” descriptions for you to check out but as always decide for yourself.

West Coast I.P.A.
This West Coast-Style India Pale Ale is extravagantly hopped, full flavored, medium bodied and copper colored. A menagerie of hops is combined throughout the brewing process to impart specific characteristics. Hops used include Simcoe for a unique fruitiness and grapefruit zest, Columbus for strong hop pungency, Centennial for pine and citrus notes, and Cascade for floral aroma.

Hop Head Red Ale
Resinous hop character and bitterness balance the rich carmel malt base. We took it a step further and Amarillo dry-hopped the brew to 45 ibu’s, creating refreshing and savory hop flavors and aromas. Is it red IPA? That’s your call.

Imperial India Pale Ale
San Diego-style IPA, as it has come to be known by many, is super-hoppy, high gravity, yet highly quaffable ale. Our Imperial IPA is created in this new tradition with intense hop flavors and aromas from a unique blend of Summit and Nugget hops. It’s all about the hops!

Le Freak
This Belgian Style IPA is an “out of the box” convergence of beer styles where American Imperial IPA meets Belgian Trippel. The end result is a zesty brew with enticing American hop and Belgian yeast aromatics that lead you to delicious malts and a complex layering of hop flavors that quench and refresh your pallet.

Extra Pale Ale
This American-Style Pale Ale has a bright golden color as the name indicates. Cascade hops impart a floral aroma that is accented by citrus notes lent from Chinook hops. The hop flavors mingle with premium pale malted barley to create flavorful ale that is crisp and refreshing.

I haven’t seen them in stores yet or on tap but when you see them drop me a line at beerspotting@hotmail.com and I will forward the info on.
