Public, media response play role in police department reinstating media board for blotter

The community’s collective voice was certainly heard this week.

After receiving input from reporters and islanders who didn’t want anything to change with the popular police blotter, Bainbridge Island Police Chief Matthew Hamner reversed his decision to only provide the media with a weekly nondescript list of all police activities.

In addition to providing the media with the new crime log, press members will continue to be able to read through incident reports to better inform readers and give the public a more detailed and full picture of the types of crimes occurring on the island, and the department’s response to them.

“My original decision to replace the Media Board with a list of weekly incidents was motivated by a desire to more effectively use the BIPD officer’s time, and increase transparency to the public,” Hamner said. “The BIPD wants residents to have a true picture of crime on the Island. The past system was not providing that.”

Hamner said, for example, that during the week of April 6-12, 44 incidents were reported to the Bainbridge Island Police Department. These included suicides, sex offenses, burglaries, vehicle prowls, warrants and verbal domestics. But because some of those incidents were still under investigation or were sex offensives or involved juveniles, only 10 of those 44 incidents would’ve gone to the Media Board.

In step with Hamner’s efforts to be as transparent as possible, the Kitsap Sun typically doesn’t include sex offenses, suicides, domestic violence and incidents involving the mentally ill in its police blotter unless it’s a highly public incident.

Below is a list of the last two weeks of the crime log released this week by the BIPD. Next week, the blotter that readers have grown accustomed to will return, along with a summation of the newly provided crime log.
