Winslow, get ready for a massive sewer rate hike

The City Council voted last night to increase Winslow area sewer rates by 111 percent to pay for the last portion of the Winslow sewer plant upgrades. Loans for the remaining $1.5 million needed to complete the project have been held up by the Bainbridge Ratepayer Alliance lawsuit.

The temporary hike, which kicks in Jan. 1 and is expected to end after about six months, will be added to a regular annual sewer rate increase of 13.5 percent. The two hikes mean ratepayers will pay about 125 percent more during the first part of 2010.

Along with the 2010 regular increase, the council approved a 23 percent increase for 2011 and a 19.5 percent hike for 2012.
