Bainbridge ballots streaming in

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Kitsap election officials told me today that 41 percent of Bainbridge voters have cast a ballot as of yesterday evening.

Many more are expected to come in today from ballot drop off locations and through last-minute mailings.

The 2007 general election (the last time a presidential race was not on the general election ballot) drew almost 62 percent on Bainbridge.

Elections officials are expecting a comparable turnout for today’s election.

Check back here around 8 p.m. today for the first election results update.

UPDATED: Student attacked with knife at BHS

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

An 8th-grade student attacked and injured a 12th-grader with a knife at Bainbridge High School on Monday afternoon.

The victim suffered a minor laceration when a 14-year-old Woodward Middle School student attacked him on school grounds shortly after classes ended at 3 p.m., Bainbridge police said.

The suspect, who was arrested shortly after 3:20 p.m., was booked into the Kitsap County Juvenile Detention Center for first- and second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
Bainbridge police and school officials are not releasing names because the parties involved are juveniles.

The 17-year-old victim was treated by the school nurse immediately after the incident.

“He was given a Band-Aid and referred to a parent,” Bainbridge Island School District spokeswoman Pam Keyes said. “It was not a deep wound.”

According to witnesses, the suspect verbally challenged the victim moments before swinging a folding knife at him and striking his upper arm.

The suspect swung his knife at a second student who tackled the suspect and tried to restrain him. The suspect broke free but was confronted and arrested without incident by police near the High School Road-Madison Avenue intersection. The second student was not injured.

Police and school officials do not know the motive for the confrontation.

Police are asking witnesses and other people with information about the incident to call (206) 842-5211.
