Letter to the Editor: Cross Knows How To Get The Job Done

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

To the Editor:
As a former college athlete and current member of the County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, I am very aware of the value of organized sports and the important role that parks and recreation programs play in a family oriented community such as ours.

Thus it is a great pleasure to endorse Lee Cross for the Bainbridge Island Park Board. She completely recognizes the necessity of replacing the ballfields at Battle Point Park, and her call for an environmental review of the proposed alternatives will allow the community to have an open and public discussion so we can finally settle on a solution that we can support and move quickly to implement.

Bainbridge Mayor Joins Climate Summit

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Bainbridge Island Mayor Darlene Kordonowy is taking part in a Mayors’ Climate Protection Summit held by the U.S. Conference of Mayors Thursday and Friday in Seattle.

Kordonowy will join some 100 other city leaders from across the country in what she is calling the largest-ever meeting of American mayors devoted solely to climate protection.

Bainbridge Island’s growth-planning goals include respect of the environment, non-motorized transportation alternatives and support of local sustainable energy programs, according to a statement from the mayor’s office. The intent of the summit is to spur local and federal action on climate change. Topics will include jobs in a “green” economy; clean transportation and reducing sprawl.

The U.S. House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will also hold a special hearing in Seattle during the summit.

The summit will be keynoted by former President Bill Clinton and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Good Wednesday to You

Trick-or-treaters will descend on downtown between 4 and 6 p.m. today for our merchants’ celebration of Halloween. Don’t miss the spooky tunes coming from the Eagle Harbor Church or the free hotdogs and cider at the Seabreeze building.

Below is our story on one idea for the aging steel-electric ferries. Be sure not to miss the amazing photos of one ferry in the recent storm, at kitsapsun.com.
