Education Fund to be Established
February 24th, 2006 by bainbridge-conversationBainbridge architect couple Peter Brachvogel and Stella Carosso
are in the process of establishing an education fund for the
children of another Bainbridge architect couple killed Friday in a
vehicle collision in Eastern Washington.
Late Friday, Kirsten Hartz, 15, was in satisfactory condition and
Kyle Hartz, 13, was in serious condition in the intensive care unit
at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Their parents, Kenneth
Hartz and Kathleen Bergum, both 49, died from the accident near Cle
Elum in which another vehicle crossed the centerline and hit them
head on.
At one time, Kenneth Hartz had worked at Brachvogel and Carosso’s
firm in Winslow, BC & J Architecture, Planning &
Construction Management. The two men often had discussed college
plans for their children, Brachvogel said.
While Brachvogel assumes that the children’s medical expenses will
be taken care of by insurance, he’s not at all certain about their
college. Not wanting to intrude on the family’s privacy right now
with visits to children they do not know well, Brachvogel and
Carosso instead came up the idea of a college fund.
“And that would be for the kids; it’s always about the kids,”
Brachvogel said.
Brachvogel said that Kirsten Hartz is due home in a couple of
weeks, but that her brother will be on a longer road to recovery.
He said family members are stepping in to help.
Once the fund is established — and that should happen in a day or
two — checks made out to the Kirsten and Kyle Hartz Educational
Fund can be taken to the main branch of American Marine Bank, at
249 Winslow Way East. They can be mailed there as well. Shaun
Stephenson is the account manager. For further information,
Brachvogel can be contacted at (206) 780-9113.
