Tailgater of the Week

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

This past week’s rivalry match versus the University of *regon was essentially amateur hour, with the D*cks doing everything but bend us over and paddle our behinds. This has gained me nothing but grief from my D*ck friends in Oregon. Quite frankly, it was embarassing and the epitome of the Husky Football program over the past six years.

Luckily there were a couple individuals tailgating who were there to keep things real. I’m talking about Derek Belt and Ben Brackett, Husky Tailgaters of the Week.

It’s another tale of culinary brilliance: Belt & Brackett deep fried a duck in peanut oil and served it for fellow tailgaters prior to the game. I was fortunate enough to be there and procure some of the tasty sustenance. It is unconfirmed whether any D*ck fans were lured in.

Dear University of *regon: thank you for selecting a mascot that is so delicious. When deep fried, the dark meat compliments the acidity of my Manny’s Pale Ale.

The recipe: take one cleaned, defeathered duck and place into a propane heated pot of peanut oil; 5 minutes per pound. Note: preheat the oil first and you need a rod to hold the duck in place.

Other notables: Some anaonymous tailgaters roasted a duck, but it was more just to watch it burn. It was not actually eaten. Other Husky fans threw pieces of bread at Oregon fans as they passed by. Good times.

Big Ben Tailgate of the Week

Big Ben: Tailgater of the Week

There are some positives coming out of this past week’s heart breaking loss to ASU. First, we’re probably not going to have to worry about making one of those pesky bowl games. Second, we can be sure that Nick Holt is putting a beat down on the Huskies secondary as we speak. Last, we did find an overwhelmingly qualified candidate for tailgater of the week.

The tailgating experience is fairly weak in Tempe; it’s just too damn hot. We then looked for the best, most worthy Husky fan for this post. This week’s honoree: Big Ben.

Big Ben made the trip down from Tacoma with his wife to watch the Dawgs take on the Sun Devils. After consuming several beers prior to and during the match, he engaged with some surly ASU fans and may or may not have flipped them the bird. This resulted in him being escorted out of the building by security, who thought he was simply too awesome to be in the presence of ASU fans.

True Husky fans never quit. Still wanting to see the rest of the game, Big Ben proceeded to buy another ticket AND pay an ASU student $20 for his shirt (so he wouldn’t be recognized when he returned). The shirt was a little too small, however. Simple solution: rip off the sleeves and turn it inside out. See the picture above. He then watched the rest of the game in another section.

After the game he lost track of his wife and met up with us at a local bar. He said it was no issue because he “had her debit card, and she didn’t have that much cash.” Quite simply hilarious and deserving of praise.

Big Ben is the owner of the 48th St. Pub and Eatery on Yakima Ave in Tacoma. Go check it out sometime.

One review of his place:

“The 48th is like coming home to your friends after a long trip.  They are such nice people here and their drinks are made with love…aw.  But really, they do make some damn fine drinks here.  The service is excellent and it’s never fully packed so there’s always a place to sit and have a drink while you chill out.”

Tailgater of the Week

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Every week during the football season with a Husky home game I’m profiling the tailgater(s) who goes the extra mile to ensure the awesomeness of their given tailgate. It could be a selfless act, a defining moment or even an ingenious idea that positively influences the tailgating experience.

Above: Stevie G. gives the Chuck Norris thumbs up for Flying W burgers

Winner: Steve Gorski and Alex Rosinbum

Tailgating Faction: The Flying Ws

Reason: Exceptional culinary vision and improvisation

The Flying Ws witnessed an exquisite culinary performance prior to the game against Arizona. Master Chefs Jon Steven Gorski and Alex Rosinbum perfected a double sized 1/3 pound burger seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic salt and canola oil AND stuffed with onions, bacon, green peppers, potato and pepper jack cheese. I’m labeling this the official burger of the Flying Ws and Husky tailgating.

Couple this amazing recipe with both Red Mill sauce (courtesy Alex) and Green Chili sauce (courtesy Steve) and you get the best pregame burger I’ve ever had. Hats off to both of you. Your contributions made the Arizona tailgate an overwhelming success. Cheers!

Honorable mention: Ryan Burrows for suggesting the tailgater of the week award.
